Last week we found out what happens to your body after drinking Coke and now we're afraid to say Diet Coke drinkers, you're not really better off...
Within the first 10 minutes of drinking a can of Diet Coke the acid attacks your tooth enamel while the artificial sweetener Aspartame tricks your taste receptors into thinking they have just processed sugar.
After 20 minutes, your body will trigger insulin to be released – sending your body into ‘fat storage mode’. Some studies suggest sugar free is actually even worse than consuming sugar itself – doubling the risk of metabolic syndromes linked to diabetes.
Forty minutes later and you get an ‘addictive high similar in the way cocaine works’, the graphic suggests. This is the effect of the caffeine and aspartame working together to overstimulate your neuroreceptors. Not nice.
Niraj Naik, who created the graphic for his blog The Renegade Pharmacist, said: ‘A can of diet coke provides no nourishment and would replace a more nutritious drink you could have drunk while potentially depleting your body of essential minerals.
‘It will never quench your thirst as it dehydrates rather than hydrates your body. A lack of vital water can lead to brain fog, poor concentration, fatigue and feeling irritable.’
