For Locals Only this week Blake announces EP date + releases addictive pop banger ‘CPU’!
Indie-pop artist Blake has released her new single ‘CPU’. Off the back of her Official NZ Hot 20 Singles Chart success for ‘'You Don’t Decide’ - ‘CPU’ is the third single to be released from this rising star’s much-anticipated EP SKEPTICAL - which drops October 7.
It’s a song about being infatuated with someone who’s unavailable. Consumed by a teenage-like obsession that romanticises idealistic scenarios that will likely never happen. Leaning more into the alt-pop sphere than her other releases, Blake says it feels like a more authentic space for her artistically.
“It feels like it’s fully me,” she says. “I worked on it for two years and took it to three different producers to get it where I envisioned it to be - and I’m glad I persevered! It combines all the electronic and organic elements which I love across genres, whilst retaining the vocal as the main feature. Shout out to Ben Malone for the production and NZ on Air for believing in this song and my project.”
Hailing from Queenstown NZ, the now Auckland-based Blake has been quickly making an impression on the Aotearoa music scene - but not so long ago, she’d returned from the UK, where she’d spent five years honing her craft and immersing herself in the rich London Neo-Soul and Jazz scene.
During her time in London, she was sought out by some of the UK’s top drum and bass producers to write and record vocals in the genre. She was nominated for ‘Best Vocalist’ at the 2017 Drum and Bass awards and has over 5 million streams on Spotify on her feature tracks, with releases across Hospital Records and Shogun Audio.
Her approach and philosophy in music are centred around authentic songwriting, re-telling personal experiences in metaphorically unique and interesting ways, taking influence from artists such as Jordan Rakei, Amy Winehouse and Julia Michaels.
She released her debut EP HOME TRUTH in 2019, which Clash branded as ‘meaningful pop with subtle soul and jazz influences.’ For her upcoming EP SKEPTICAL, Blake has been working with some of NZ’s top emerging producers, blending her past and present musical influences of soul, electronic and pop music to generate something fresh and unique.
