An Aussie woman has gone TikTok viral after waking up from surgery with an Irish accent

Have you ever had surgery on your tonsils and woke up to find you have a different accent? 

Australian woman, Angie Yen experienced this just after undergoing tonsil surgery last year in April 2021 and found her accent to sound Irish and not Australian.  

"I was very worried and freaking out. I felt like I was waking up in someone's body but it was my face I was seeing in the mirror. I was very confused," she said to 7 News recently.  

After having no explanations from doctors as to why and how this was happening, she started sharing her story on TikTok.

Angie wanted to prompt "people from all over the world [to] reach out to me saying how they were glad they finally found another person who has this isolating and rare condition and they felt validated".  

A year later Angie shared to 7 News "I still have a light American and Northern Irish accent. It gets thicker when I'm stressed, tired or run down." 

"I still struggle to pronounce words sometimes in my professional life as a dentist – embarrassing at times, people struggle to understand what I'm saying and I get frustrated being asked to repeat myself. I still sound different and some days with a thicker accent." 

To hear that someone in the medical field is on her side must be a huge relief!
