Mean Girls: The Musical is coming to cinemas and the very first trailer has just been unveiled!

The musical is based on the ultimate classic high school movie of a group of girls managing the politics of high school - and following a two-year run on Broadway, it is set to come full circle and premiere on the silver screen 2024.

The show follows the story of home-schooled girl Cady Heron who moves from Africa to join a regular high school in the US and ends up navigating life as a member of popular clique The Plastics whilst trying to end the reign of Queen Bee Regina George.

Producers Lorne Michaels and Sonia Friedman added: “Mean Girls is a timeless comedy that for decades has connected with generations of audiences across the globe. Having worked together for several years on this production, we are immensely proud.”

The musical - with a book by Tina Fey, music by Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Nell Benjamin - features songs like Apex PredatorWorld Burn and I'd Rather Be Me and received 12 Tony Award nominations after opening on The Great White Way.

It also seems like some of the original cast may be making special cameos in the movie, earlier this year Amanda Seyfried told Entertainment Tonight that she and her former Mean Girls co-stars are "100 per cent into" making a cameo.

"It's been a long legacy for Mean Girls, and I think we all kinda just need to hang," she said.

Kiwi fans will get to watch the Mean Girls musical movie – starring Angourie Rice, Auli’i Cravalho, Reneé Rapp, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, Bebe Wood, Christopher Briney, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, with Tina Fey, with Tim Meadows - in cinemas from January 18, 2024 – we can’t wait!
