Each day McDonald’s stores around the UK use about 1.8 million plastic straws.
These are straws that cannot be broken down, and will end up sitting in a landfill somewhere for the foreseeable future.
This is why the fast food giant has decided to take a step in the right direction and make the switch to paper straws and phase out plastic straws in the UK completely by 2019.
They have been trialing these plastic straws at selected stores and the results have been pleasing.
The paper straws have the go-ahead for the 1,361 stores around the UK, but nothing has announced for the remaining 36,000 stores around the globe.
Paul Pomroy, chief executive of McDonald’s UK & Ireland had this to say about the switch:
“Reflecting the broader public debate, our customers told us they wanted to see a move on straws but to do so without compromising their overall experience when visiting our restaurants.”
Hopefully we’ll be seeing this change around our side of the world sometime soon!
