Those Tiny Buttons On Your Jeans Are There For an Important Reason

Ever wondered what those tiny buttons on your jeans are for? It turns out that the little buttons known as rivets play a really important part in holding your jeans together. 

In fact, the history of the rivet goes back as far as the jeans themselves. 

On the 20th of May 1873, Levi Strauss, founder of Levi jeans, obtained a joint patent for the process of putting rivets on trousers. At this time Levi was a well-respected San Francisco-based businessman.

But it was a tailor, Jacob Davis, that actually came up with the use of the rivets. Davis had worked out that if little rivets were placed on the points of straining that happens on a pair of trousers then they would become more durable.

But to make rivets come to live, Davis required financial backing, so he approached Levi and together they sought the patent.

Fun fact for you: it wasn’t until 1960 that the waist overalls as they were known acquired the name ‘jeans’.
