Zac Efron looks totally unrecognisable in the trailer for his latest film 'Gold'

Zac Efron has come a long way since his high school musical days, AKA the glory days. 

The 34-year-old actor is starring in a new survival thriller movie - and he's virtually unrecognisable in the teaser trailer.

Efron shared a teaser for the film on his Instagram page which details the extremely harsh conditions the crew had to get through in order to film. 

But, it was the way Zac appears in the film that has got plenty of fans talking. 

It seems the gelled hair and perfectly groomed face is long gone for the actor, or at least in this film as he takes on a completely new role of a man trapped in the harsh Aussie Outback. 

"Filming this was brutal— but I love this s***," he wrote. "So proud of everyone involved and thank you to everyone who has watched so far."

You can catch the new (and unimproved) Zac Efron in 'Gold' at cinemas across Aotearoa - and although he may look different, critics are saying it could be his best work yet!
